What You Don’t Know Yet Episode 3 is available. You can find it HERE.
Episode 3 is about principals. Your boss is on your side and ready to help you. But sometimes it feels like the principal is at odds with you or setting obstacles in your way. Your principal wants the school to run successfully. If you can help the principal achieve that goal, you’ll be considered a valuable employee.
So what does a first year teacher need to do to build a good relationship with the principal? And what is a principal’s expectation for first year teachers?
Here’s the Episode 3 Lesson Plan and a few notes that might help you.
Objective: By the end of this episode, you’ll know what principals expect from first year teachers and you’re going to have a few ideas about how to develop a professional relationship with your principal.
Do Now: What is the principal’s role in your daily teaching life?
Lesson: Margaret and Glenetta are joined by Maggie Lang to talk about building a positive relationship with your principal. They discuss some things that work and a couple of things that haven’t. And there is a special interview with Principal Stephen Sippel to talk about what principals actually expect from new teachers.
Homework: Two parts to our homework for you:
- First: Google your principal. Look for some news and social media that might tell you a little more about what your principal values.
- Second: Find out how to best communicate with your principal. Ask some staff or the secretaries about the best ways to contact your principal in several different situations.
Notes/Credits: When you are frustrated with someone at work, try to attack the PROBLEM, not the PERSON. Your principal, your assistant principal, your staff, your parents, and you all have the same goal. Approach problems from a mindset of problem solving and–the next thing you know–you’re solving problems!
Thanks to Maggie Lang for giving us her insights into her experiences with administrators. And thanks again to Stephen Sippel for talking with us about his expectations for new teachers. They made our show so much better today! We hope you learned as much as we did from them.
